All about appointments.

I dropped my dog off an hour ago and I'm just passing by your shop, should I stop in?

Please do not stop in. I know you are only trying to be efficient and are in a hurry to get your fur baby home, but when your pet sees you they will become excited. It is very difficult and potentially dangerous to try to groom a pet when they are excited and jumping around. We confirmed what number we should call when we checked you in, and we will call that number when we are done pampering your pooch.

Why is it so hard to get in when I call on my day off?

We are a busy grooming salon. Please understand that we are in demand so booking an appointment without notice is nearly impossible. We will of course try to work with you, it at all possible, but it's best to try to book at least a week or two in advance.

I have a 7 year old shih tzu with a bad heart. He hates hair dryers and I am scared he will have a heart attack if you try to dry him. Does this mean he will come home wet?

No, this does not mean he will come home wet. We need him to be completely dry to be able to complete his hair doo. We have a few different drying options available. We have never had a heart attack on premises and you can be sure we will do what ever we can to ensure we never do. We have a two speed professional dryer that also has three different air pressure attachements. If the lowest of these is too much for him, we also have hand dryers, much like what you use on your own hair, AND if that is too much we will use our cool air cage dryers as a last resort. These basically circulate air around the kennel and take a very long time to dry pets. Please be patient as we will do what is right for your pet, and that may not be what is best for your schedule. We will bring these sorts of things to your attention when you identify any special needs your pet may have.

My baby is not purebred and I rescued her from a hard life. She is extremely stressed out by cages. Will she need to be in a cage?

Normally we give every client a break in a kennel in between stations. We like this option as it allows them a few minutes to relax between steps so the overall process is not stressful. We are not a 'get them, get them out as fast as possible to maximize profits kind of salon. We are more concerned about the comfort and welfare of our clients. So, in turn, if your baby would be made anxious by being in a kennel we can arrange your appointment later in the day so she can go through the process, begining to end without the need to go into a kennel. Please keep in mind that this means we may have to work a little harder to find a time that will work for this type of appointment.

Last month it took three hours to complete my dogs appointment and this month it only took an hour and a half. Why such inconsistent times.

None of the groomers here are able to see the future. It is very difficult to foresee how all of our clients will behave on any given day. The more cooperative they are, the faster things go. There are many other factors that can effect completion time as well, such as; are the phones ringing a lot today? is it extra humid making drying times longer? are the dogs extra dirty or heavily matted? Please be patient. We will call you as soon as we are done, and more importantly, we would call you if anything out of the ordinary happened.

I keep forgetting to book early enough, but always ask to be on your waiting list for an earlier appointment, but you never call me to come in earlier.

We do keep a waiting list for clients who have waited too long to get in. We don't always get a chance to use the waiting list though as most of our long time clients know that if you miss an appointment, you have to rebook meaning another week or two before their pet gets the much need grooming they were coming for.  This is why most of our clients ask to be booked back in when they come to pick up their pet. Some clients have their appointments booked for the rest of the year. It's always easier to call us and ask to push an appointment back a couple of weeks than to get in on short notice.

Something came up and I'm running late. Is that going to be a big problem?

If you are running late, please call us and let us know. If you are 15 minutes late or less we can work with that, with minimal delays to completion time. If you are up to 30 minutes late, we can probably still complete your pets grooming, but it may take considerably longer as we will need to work around our clients that were on time. It would not be fair for us to delay their appointments. If you are more than 30 minutes late, we may be able to help, but will probably have assumed that if you didn't call to tell us you were late that we weren't coming so we will probably have filled your spot with someone from our waiting list.

I have been called into work on my appointment day. There is no way that I can drop him off for 10 when I have to be at work for 9.

There is always someone here by 7:30 weekdays and 8:30 on Saturdays that we are open. We do not charge any additional charge for early drop offs. We may not be able to start the appointment any earlier, but you won't need to cancel and possibly have to wait weeks to get back in. We also offer late pick ups as well, so if you don't get off work before we close, simply let us know when you are dropping off your pet and we will get you to pay now. When you get off work you will simply go to the main vet doors and one of the vet staff will be more than happy to bring your pet to you. *this is only available on weekdays up to 7:30PM. If you find out after you have dropped your pet off that you cannot make it until later, simply call us and we will take your Visa/MasterCard payment over the phone, or help you send us an interac e-transfer (email money transfer) or tell you how much cash to bring with you in an envelope clearly marked with your name, your pets name and "Groomers".

I have a shelty who's skin is really getting bad. Is there anything you can do to help her?

We work very closely with the vets here. In situations like this, they normally recommend going very short to allow the skin to breath and make applying topical solutions simpler and more effective. All of our products are PH balanced for dogs and we also have special shampoos that are formulated for dogs with hyper-sensitive skin. A number of our clients also bring in prescription shampoos that their vets have provided. We can use these and return them to you, or label them and keep them on hand so you don't have to try to remember them each time you come in. *we do not make recommendations as to what prescription shampoos may work best for your pet.

*some prescription shampoos do not leave the coat as bright, as light or as shinny as your would be used too with our own shampoos.

My dog has gotten into some paint, can you help me?

We will try to help you with bathing emergencies. Paint can be very dangerous to dogs as they may try to lick themselves clean, accidentally ingesting toxic substances. Please call us right away. We will try to fit you in for a bath. We may not be able to do much more than the bath, but the important thing is trying to ensure your pet is safe.

Tips for before, after and in between appointments.

What can I do so you don't have to shave my baby every time?

The main reason we would need to shave your baby would be if there is sever matting. Matts are very dangerous if not taken care of. They can lead to hot spots, sores, pain and even infection. To prevent matts requires attention to brushing. If your pet becomes wet, you need to brush and dry the fur as soon as possible or there is a good chance it will tangle. Matts can be too bad to be brushed. Brushing matts that are too tight can cause brush burn and be very painfull to remove as they pull the skin. In these cases, shaving is the only humane way to resolve the issue.

I brought my puppy in to get nails trimmed and he started screaming as soon as you picked up his foot. Why does he act like this.

There are a couple of possible reasons he could react this way. One reason could be that you or another groomer may have cut the nails too short causing him a lot of pain and now he panics when he knows we are going to try to trim them again. One thing you can do is randomly, gently play with his feet and touch his nails until he is no longer anxious about it. Repeated visits to a groomer who knows how to cut nails without causing pain will also slowly build his trust back up.

My shitzu has hair growing from her nose in front of her eyes but she won't let us touch her face. I am scared I will poke her eyes because she thrashes around so much. What can I do?

If the face grows much faster than the rest of the body and a full grooming isn't warranted, we can do a face trim. A lot of clients tell us they can't handle even minor touch ups at home, but we are able to do it here because we are trained to handle and work with dogs. One thing you can do to try to make it easier to work with your little one is gently holding the hair of her 'beard'. Just do it randomly. At first she will pull and shake her head when you try it, but eventually she will learn that it doesn't hurt if she remains still. It's normally easier for us since they are not as confident with us, whereas they know what buttons of yours they can push to get their way. Give us a call and we can book you in for a face trim in between regular appointments.
